Back it up… Backflow?

Plumbing with water meter and valves

What is Backflow?

Backflow is the undesired backwards movement of waste water into a clean water supply. This can happen for a variety of reasons ranging from an issue with the city to issues from your own home or place of business. Some things that can cause backflow:

  • Cracks in the pipe
  • Large snowmelt/heavy rain
  • Blockages from tree roots
  • Plumbing system deterioration
  • Failed sump pump
  • Hair and grease clogs
  • And more!

Backflow is a very serious problem that needs to be tested for, prevented, and if needed, repaired. Luckily, Z PLUMBERZ does all!

Prevent Backflow

Preventive measures include regular testing and possible repair or replacement of your backflow prevention device. It’s recommended to have testing done annually by a certified plumber, if fact, some buildings are legally required to conduct yearly backflow testing as part of keeping a building up to code. This is a requirement in nearly all the US, and requires proof of testing.

A backflow test does not take long, typically 20 to 30 minutes, but your plumber can give you a better time estimate. What can I expect during backflow testing? Your plumber will shut off your water supply temporarily and then your backflow prevention device will be inspected and tested. Finally, your water will be turned back on and several taps in your house will be turned on for the plumber to assess further if repairs or even replacements are needed.

Types of Backflow Prevention Devices

Back Flow Prevention Devices

Backflow is prevented with “backflow prevention devices” ; it might also be called a sewer backflow valve. This works by stopping sewage from entering your home’s sewage system if a main sewage line becomes overloaded. There is a small flap that allows the exiting of sewage and sewer vapors, but blocks them from entering. There are many kinds of these devices, and a plumber can determine which is best for you. Here are just some of your options from the Safe Water Commission:
