Yearly Plumbing To-Do List

Happy 2026! There are many things to do in a year, but it is important to remember to take a few minutes every once in a while to check up on your plumbing systems. Doing periodic inspections can prevent catastrophe later on and allows you to plan ahead!

Below is a to-do list of what you can do to keep your plumbing in tip- top shape, some are seasonal and most only take a few minutes to complete!

Clog and Leak Detection:

  • Check that water pressure is adequate
  • Check shower heads and faucets for leaks, cracks, and clean hard water buildup
  • Check under appliances for water and new water stains
  • Check all drains for speed
  • Clean out the P-traps of sinks

Checking for leaks or clogs keeps your day-to- day running smoothly, and helps you save on your water bill! Cleaning the P-traps, shower heads, and faucets can drastically improve your bathroom experience. While it may not be immediately obvious to a guest, your space will feel cleaner and you’ll have that satisfaction of a successful DIY.

Appliances Check and Maintenance:

  • Drain and flush water heater
  • Use a decalcifier on water heater once every 3 years
  • Check toilet flaps for damage and rust
  • Clean dishwasher every 3 months, clean filter every month
  • Flush fridge water lines twice a year and replace filter
  • Inspect washing machine hose

Appliances are large and often expensive to replace, it’s important to keep up with their maintenance to get the most life out of them. If you’ve recently moved and you are unsure of when the last time the appliances were last maintenanced, consider doing a full check, clean, and if needed, replacement of smaller parts. If help is desired while handling the water heater or any other appliance, you can always call on ZPLUMBERZ of Ann Arbor!

Home Safety Checks:

  • Check visible pipes after winter/ any big freeze
  • Inspect outdoor spouts
  • Have sewers inspected with a camera every 1-5 years, depending on home age and pipe type
  • Test sump pump
  • Test water shut off valves
  • Clear debris from gutters and downspouts

Your home is your haven, it’s important to keep its plumbing structures safe by checking that everything is in order before something goes wrong. Testing essential equipment means the difference between the inconvenience of getting it serviced versus having a very real emergency that can leave major damage to your home. Always test your essential plumbing equipment yearly to catch anything that could exacerbate an emergency, and so you remember where everything is, should something go wrong.
